RÉFLEXION

LIMITED SMALL WORK SERIES

A man sits in front of a white wall with four abstract paintings hanging above him. The man has dark hair and a beard, and is wearing a black, plaid button-up shirt.
A person holding an umbrella walking on a grassy hill in front of a large, ornate house surrounded by trees, with an overcast sky.

Réflexion is a limited series created during my three-week residency at Château d’Orquevaux. This collection of four original oil paintings explores an ongoing story I have been quietly writing and imagining over time.

At the center of the series is the image of reflection — a symbol of rebirth, renewal, love, suffering, and baptism; the cleansing waters that lead toward new life. During my time in the French countryside, I experienced a deeply personal process of transformation, contemplation, and surrender — learning to let go and take the leap into the water.

Throughout the series, water functions as both mirror and threshold. Within each composition, the ripple becomes the precise moment of change: the instant where stillness is interrupted and transformation begins.

Inspired by the local village and the château itself — its aged walls, weathered interiors, and layered history — these works also explore the house as a metaphor for the self. I often connect the physical properties of the painting and panel to our own human condition. Scrapes, cuts, chipped paint, and surface marks are intentionally preserved, allowing the materials to participate in the final image. Through this process of aging and erosion, the work reinforces themes of transformation, restoration, and renewal.

My hope is that these paintings inspire reflection within others as well. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has followed and supported my journey so far. While this series begins as painting, I ultimately envision Réflexion unfolding into something larger — a moving image, a story, a film. These works are only the beginning.
